Google’s Algorithm Update Favors Responsive Websites

Share Article:

If your martial arts school’s website is not responsive you are likely losing up to two-thirds of your potential leads instantly. Not having a mobile friendly website causes visitors on mobile devices to have to zoom in and scroll left and right to properly read the website. Usability studies have shown this is one of the most annoying things to make a visitor to website to do and more than 80% of website visitors will immediately leave your martial arts school’s website.

Making your website responsive solves this problem and allows your website to automatically fit the size of the device it is viewed on to accommodate desktops, laptops, mobile phones and tablets. Since more than 60% of all online traffic now comes from mobile devices, Google is beginning to cater to mobile users by giving them the best possible experience. Their recent update to their search engine algorithm now favors responsive (or mobile friendly) websites and ranks them higher in search engine results, causing non-mobile friendly websites to be demoted. The online community has rightfully nicknamed the update “mobilegeddon” due to the large number of websites being affected.

This update has been problematic for martial arts schools as over 90% of school owners and industry website providers have not yet adopted the responsive website design. Whether they are unaware or simply can’t afford it, they are beginning to see less website visitors and seen a decrease in their monthly leads. Since schools rely heavily on local search engine results they are one of the businesses that are seeing the worst of it.

The Push for Mobile Friendly Content

In the past, Google has pushed for more relevant and interesting content. While this remains true, they are catering to mobile users for the simple fact that your content may be great but is useless if people can’t read it.

With Google’s new update, top-ranked martial arts school websites may begin losing even more leads and students. This update has the potential of pushing a site in the #1 or #2 search result spot down to #6 or below.
